WOMEN OF THE TOWN

The Magistrate's Wife

Mrs. Mineko Toyama (1903- )

For generations a member of my family served as the feudal magistrate in Kitamachi. The house in Takajo, where I was born, had formerly been the magistrate's official residence.

The roof of our house was reed-thatched, not tiled. The drainpipes running along the edge of the eaves were made of thick bamboo sliced in half and with the nodes removed. Seen from the ground, they were a dirty brown color; they were rotting in several places and mold grew all over them. The vertical rain leaders were made of plaited hemp: when it rained, the water came trickling down the ropes, ran over the fine gravel at the bottom, and flowed down in tiny streams into the River Tsukiji which was just behind our house. The building was extremely old.
